Question
Study the following diagram which is the experimental set-up of some separation techniques.
Which of the following statement regarding this experiment is/ are correct?
(i). This method is used to separate the different gases from air.
(ii). It is used to separate the mixture of acetone and water
(iii). It is the based on principle of repetitive cooling and condensation of vapors.
(iv). This method can also be used to separate those components that have very high boiling points.
- Only (i) and (ii)
- Only (i) and (iii)
- Only (iii)
- Only (iv)
Hint:
The experimental set up in the diagram shows fractional distillation.
The correct answer is: Only (iv)
The experimental set up in the diagram shows fractional distillation.
Fractional distillation is the separation of a mixture into its component parts, or fractions. Chemical compounds are separated by heating them to a temperature at which one or more fractions of the mixture will vaporize. It uses distillation to fractionate. Generally the component parts have boiling points that differ by less than 25 °C (45 °F) from each other under a pressure of one atmosphere.
This method can also be used to separate those components that have very high boiling points.
