A city is designing the layout of a new park. The park will be divided into several different areas, including a field, a picnic area and a recreation area. One design of the park is shown below.

What are the dimensions of the entire park in terms of x?

  1. (x + 50) ft by (x + 30) ft
  2. (x + 90) ft by (2x + 20) ft
  3. (x + 45) ft by (x + 95) ft
  4. (x + 80) ft by (2x + 95) ft

Factorize the equations and find the roots of the equation

The correct answer is: (x + 90) ft by (2x + 20) ft


    Let’s factor each of the areas.
    1. x2 + 95x + 450 (Game Field)
    Factors of 450 are 5 and 90.
    5 + 90 = 95
    x2 + 95x + 450 = (x + 90) (x + 5)
    2. x2 + 45x + 450 (Picnic area)
    Factors of 450 are 30 and 15.
    30     + 15 = 45
    x2 + 45x + 450 = (x + 30) (x + 15)
    3. x2 + 35x + 300 (Recreation area)
    Factors of 300 are 15 and 20.
    15     +  20 = 35
    x2 + 35x + 300 = (x + 20) (x + 15)
    So, the length of the park is the length of game field which is x + 90.
    Width of the park = Width of the game field + width of recreation area
    = (x + 5) + (x + 15) = 2x + 20
    (Width of the recreation area = width of the picnic area = x + 15)
    Area of the park = length * width
    = (x + 90) (2x + 20)
