An airplane flies 56 miles due north and then 33 miles due east. Calculate the miles is the plane from its starting point.

According to the question the triangle formed by the distance covered to north, distance covered to East and the distance between starting point and end point is right angled triangle. As the angle formed by turning from to east is 90 degree. So, we get, hypotenuse, the distance between starting and end point assuming to be h , base, distance covered to north 56 miles and perpendicular, the distance covered to east is 33 miles. Further using Pythagoras theorem we can find the length of the required side  of the triangle formed.
