Question

John drained the water in his tub. The amount of water left in the tub (in liters) as a function of time (in minutes) is graphed.

How much water is getting drained in 2.5 minutes?

  1. 360
  2. 180
  3. 140
  4. 0

hintHint:

John drained the water in his tub. In that given graph we can see x-axis as a time and y-axis as a water. We need to focus on graph whether that is given that the amount of water remove as per time and by that we are able find the solution easily.

The correct answer is: 180

First we need to find out the amount of water drained at time 2.5 minutes.
Firstly, in a graph x-axis which is also horizontal axis is the time of graph.
And , y-axis is which is vertical axis is the Amount of water at a time t minutes.
    graph
    According to given date,
In 5 minutes of time the amount of water drained is 360 liters. So we find out How much water drained in 1 minute :
    5min → 360 liters
    1min → 360/5 liters
    1min → 72 liters
So, The amount of water drained in 1 minute is 72 liters. Now , we can easily find out how much liters of water drained in 2.5 minutes by multiplying in it:
    1min → 72 liters
    (1 x 2.5 )min→( 72 x 2.5 )liters
    2.5min → 180 liters
Therefore, In the given time 2.5 minutes the water drained is 180 liters.
    The correct answer is 180 (option(b)) .

In that same question we can also fine the how much amount of water remove at any minutes by finding water drained at one minutes 360/5=72. Which leads to us to find the water drained at any given minutes by multiplying in it.

How many increasing/decreasing intervals are there in this graph?

It very easy to find the increasing and decreasing interval in graph you just have to focus on the graph where its going upward or downward or you can also find increasing and decreasing by finding the slope of the line. If the slope is positive then line is increasing otherwise slope is negative then line is decreasing.
