Question
The bottom of a 13-foot straight ladder is set into the ground 5 feet away from a wall. That time the top of the ladder is leaned against the wall, Find the distance above the ground it will reach.
- 12 feet
- 13.5 feet
- 13 feet
- 11.6 feet
Hint:
According to the question the triangle formed by the ladder, wall and the ground is right angled triangle. As the angle formed by wall and ground is 90 degree. So, we get, hypotenuse, length of the ladder 13 foot, base, distance between ladder and wall 5 foot and perpendicular, the distance above the ground ladder will reach assuming to be p. Further using Pythagoras theorem we can find the length of the required side of the triangle formed.
The correct answer is: 12 feet
According to the question the triangle formed by the ladder, wall and the ground is right angled triangle.
So, hypotenuse, length of the ladder = 13 foot
base, distance between ladder and wall = 5 foot
perpendicular, the distance above the ground ladder will reach = p
Now using Pythagoras theorem,
The distance above the ground ladder will reach is 12 foot.
