Question

What is the slope of the line with an x-intercept of 4 and a y-intercept of –3?

  1. negative 4 over 3
  2. negative 3 over 4
  3. 3 over 4
  4. 4 over 3

hintHint:

Slope = m = y2-y1 / x2-x1

The correct answer is: 3 over 4

    GIVEN-
    x-intercept = 4
    y-intercept = -3
    TO FIND-
    Slope of the line (m)
    SOLUTION-
    We know that x-intercept of a line is the value of x-coordinate where y = 0.
    ∴ x-intercept can be written as point (4,0)
    Similarly, y-intercept of a line is the value of y-coordinate where x = 0.
    ∴ y-intercept can be written as point (0,-3)
    Hence, we can find the slope of the given line by using the above 2 points on the line, where-
    x1 = 4, y1 = 0, x2 = 0 and y2 = -3.
    Slope = m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)
    ∴ Slope = m = (-3 - 0) / (0 - 4)
    ∴ Slope = m = -3 / -4
    ∴ Slope = m = 3/4
    FINAL ANSWER-
    Option 'c' i.e. '3/4' is the correct answer to the given question.
