Question

Which equation represents the line shown in the slope-intercept form.

  1. y = 3 x + 2
  2. straight y space equals space 1 third space space straight x space minus space 2
  3. y = 3 x - 2
  4. straight y space equals space 1 third space straight x space plus space 2

hintHint:

In this question, we have to find the equation of the slope intercept form. The co-ordinates of the points in the line are A(0,-2) and B(6,0). Firstly we will find the slope of the line. And then put the value in the equation of slope intercept form of co-ordinates a point and the slope to find the value of c. Further as know we have the value of both c and m, we can find the equation of the slope form.

The correct answer is: straight y space equals space 1 third space space straight x space minus space 2

    The co-ordinates of the line given are A(0,-2) and B(6,0).
    Slope of AB, m
    equals fraction numerator y subscript 2 minus y subscript 1 over denominator x subscript 2 minus x subscript 1 end fraction
equals fraction numerator 0 minus left parenthesis negative 2 right parenthesis over denominator 6 minus 0 end fraction
equals 2 over 6
equals 1 third
    By the slope-intercept form we know;
    y = mx + c
    Given,
    As per the given point, we have;
    y = -2 and x = 0
    m = 1/3
    Hence, putting the values in the above equation, we get;
    -2 = 1/3 (0) + c
    c = -2
    Hence, the required equation will be;
    y equals x over 3 minus 2
