Question

A 500 gm packet of tea is sold for Rs 80 and a tooth brush costing Rs 11 is given free with it. The shopkeeper thus makes a profit of 15% on it. What did the shopkeeper pay for it?

  1. Rs 70
  2. Rs 60
  3. Rs 85
  4. Rs 65

hintHint:

The given cost of tea packet is Rs. 80. Brush of Rs. 11 is given free on it. The profit on this is 15%. We have to find the cost at which shopkeeper bought it. We will find the actual selling price of just tea. Then we will use the formula of profit percentage to find the cost price.

The correct answer is: Rs 60

    The selling price of tea and brush is Rs. 80. Even its said brush is free on it, the price of the brush is added to the total selling price.
    So, selling price of tea is given by
    Selling price of tea(S.P) = Total selling price - Price of brush.
    = 80 - 11
    = 69
    So, the selling price of tea is Rs. 69.
    The given profit percentage is 15%.
    We will find the cost price of tea.
    The profit percentage is given by

space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space 0.15 space equals space fraction numerator 69 space minus space C. P over denominator C. P end fraction
    Multiplying both the sides by C.P
    0.15C.P = 69 - C.P
    Adding C.P to both the side
    0.15C.P + C.P = 69
    1.15C.P = 69
    Dividing both the sides by 1.15
    C.P = 60
    So, the tea costs Rs. 60 to the shopkeeper.

    In such questions, we should be careful about finding the actual selling price before finding the cost price. We should know the formula to find the profit.
