Question

The difference between C.I and S.I for 2 years at 10% per annum is Rs 50. Find the sum

  1. Rs 4000
  2. Rs 6000
  3. Rs 3000
  4. Rs 5000

hintHint:

We are given the difference between compound interest and simple interest. It is Rs. 50. We are given the rate of interest and tenure. We are asked to find the sum, or in other words principal amount. We will use the formulas of S.I and C.I to find the answer.

The correct answer is: Rs 5000

    The given values are as follows:
    Difference between C.I and S.I = Rs 50
     Rate of interest = 10% per annum
    Tenure = 2 years
    We have to find the sum.  We will denote it by "P".
    The formula of simple interest is S. I space equals fraction numerator P. R. T over denominator 100 end fraction
    Substituting the values we have
    S. I space equals fraction numerator P space cross times 10 space cross times space 2 space over denominator 100 end fraction
space space space space space space space equals space P over 5
space space space space space space space equals 0.2 P
    We will substitute the values in the formula of compound interest.
    C. I space equals P space cross times space open parentheses 1 space plus space R over 100 close parentheses to the power of T minus P
space space space space space space space equals P space cross times open parentheses 1 space plus space 10 over 100 close parentheses squared minus P
space space space space space space equals P space cross times space open parentheses 1 space plus space 0.1 close parentheses squared minus P
space space space space space space equals P space cross times space left parenthesis 1.1 right parenthesis squared space minus space P
space space space space space space equals 1.21 P space minus space P
space space space space space space equals left parenthesis 1.21 space minus space 1 right parenthesis space P
C. I equals space 0.21 P
    We have to value of difference of C.I and S.I
    C.I - S.I = 0.21P - 0.2P
    50 = (0.21 - 0.2)P
    50 = 0.01P
    Rearranging we get,
    0.01P = 50
    Multiplying both the sides by 100 we get,
    P = 5000
    So, the sum is Rs.5000

    For such questions, we should know the formulas for simple and compound interest.
