Question
The lengths of parallel sides of trapezium are in the ratio 7 : 5 and the distance between them is 14cm The area of trapezium is 252 cm².Find the length of its parallel sides.
- 21cm, 15cm
- 21cm, 5cm
- 20cm 5 cm
- None
Hint:
We are given the ratio of parallel sides of a trapezium. The distance between them means height. The height is 14cm. The area of the trapezium is 252cm2. We will use the formula of area of trapezium to find the parallel sides.
The correct answer is: 21cm, 15cm
The given quantities are as follows:
Height = 14cm
Area = 252cm2
Ratio of the sides is 7:5
Let x be the constant of proportionality of the sides.
So, if one side is 5x, the other side will be 7x.
The formula of area of trapezium is
Area = × sum of parallel sides × height
Substituting the values get,
252 = × (7x + 5x) × 14
252 = × 14 × 12x
252 = 7 × 12x
Dividing both the sides by 7
36 = 12x
Rearranging the equation
12x = 36
Dividing both the sides by 12 we get,
x = 3
As value of x is 3, the length of sides will be
5x = 5(3) = 15
7x = 7(3) = 21
The length of the parallel sides are 15cm and 21cm.
For such questions, we should know the formula of area of trapezium.

A so lid piece of metal in the form of a Cuboid of dimes ions 24 cm x 18 cm x 4 cm is melted down and casted into a cube Find length of each edge of cube.
For such questions, we should know the formulas of volume of different shapes. We have to remember that when any metal piece is melted, it's volume doesn't change. The change is there only in the dimensions of the metal piece.
