Question
A 3,000 kg truck moving at +15 m/s hits a bus 1,000 kg moving at +10 m/s in the same direction. What is the approximate velocity of the truck if the final velocity of the bus becomes 8 m/s.
- 16 m/s
- 1/16 m/s
- 12 m/s
- 1/12 m/s
Hint:
Use the law of conservation of momentum.
The correct answer is: 16 m/s
Given that-
Mass of the truck = 3000 Kg
Speed of the truck = 15 m/s
Mass of the bus = 1000 Kg
Speed of the bus = 10 m/s
Final speed of the bus = 8 m/s
Let the final speed of the truck =v m/s
Using conservation of momentum,
(3000 x 15) + (1000 x 10) = (3000 x v) + (1000 x 8)
45,000 + 10,000 = 3000 v + 8000
55,000 - 8000 = 3000 v
47000 = 3000 v
v = 47000/3000 = 15.67 m/s
