Question

When a resistor of 11 capital omega is connected in series with an electric cell, the current flowing in it is 0.5 A. Instead, when a resistor of 5 capital omega is connected to the same electric cell in series, the current increases by 0.4 A. The internal resistance of the cell is

  1. 1.5 capital omega
  2. 2 capital omega
  3. 2.5 capital omega
  4. 3.5 capital omega

The correct answer is: 2.5 capital omega

By using i equals fraction numerator E over denominator R plus r end fraction
    rightwards double arrow 0.5 equals fraction numerator E over denominator 11 plus r end fraction Þ E equals 5.5 plus 0.5 r..…(i)
    and 0.9 equals fraction numerator E over denominator 5 plus r end fraction Þ E equals 4.5 plus 0.9 r ..…(ii)
On solving these equation, we have r equals 2.5 capital omega
