Question
A class plants a tree. Sketch the graph of the height of the tree over time. Identify the two variables ?
Describe the relationship between the two variables ?
Sketch the graph.
Hint:
Notice two points i.e., ordered pairs in the figure given.
The correct answer is: 3y – 4x = 9
SOL – Time taken by tree to grow = x years
Height of the tree = y feet
Acc. to the question, x = 0 , y = 3 and x = 3 , y = 7
Using two – point form, the equation of the line is
(y – y1) = m (x – x1) where m =
Slope, m =
= =
Equation of line is (y – 3) = (x – 0)
y – 3 = x
3y – 9 = 4x
3y – 4x = 9 which is a linear function.
Hence, the two variables namely x and y have a linear relationship. In other words, it’s a straight – line relationship between the two variables.
