Question
A ladder is 45m long. Its foot is standing on a horizontal path, its top is resting against a vertical wall. The foot of the ladder is 2.5 m from the base of the wall. How far up the wall is the top of the ladder?
Hint:
pythagoras' theorem states that “In a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of squares of the other two sides“. The sides of this triangle have been named Perpendicular, Base and Hypotenuse. Here, the hypotenuse is the longest side, as it is opposite to the angle 90°.
If a is the perpendicular, b is the base, and c is the hypotenuse, then according to the definition, the Pythagoras Theorem formula is given as
c2= a2 + b2
The correct answer is: Hence, the top of the ladder is approximately 45 m from the base.
Here, Length of base(b) = 2.5 m
Length of hypotenuse(d) = 45 m
Let’s say that the top of the ladder is at h m from the base.
Using Pythagoras theorem
d2 = h2 + b2
452 = h2 + 2.52
h2 = 452 - 2.52
Final Answer:
Hence, the top of the ladder is approximately 45 m from the base.
Final Answer:
Hence, the top of the ladder is approximately 45 m from the base.
