Question
A wheel that has 6 cogs is meshed with a larger wheel of 14 cogs. When the smaller wheel has made 21 revolutions, what is the number of revolutions made by the larger wheel?
Hint:
Hint:
In a proportional relationship, the variables are related by a constant ratio(k). For example, the equation which can relate the two variables can be written in the form:
y = (constant) x or y = k x.
So, for solving these types of questions we need to create a proportional relationship between the variables. These relationships can be direct, inverse etc.
The correct answer is: 9
Let’s say the number of cogs be represented as x and the number of revolutions be represented as y. More the number of cogs lesser will be the number of revolutions. So, we can say that number of cogs is in an inverse relationship with the number of revolutions.
y = ……..(1)
Step 1 of 2:
It is given that the smaller has 6 cogs and it makes 21 revolutions i.e. x = 6 and y = 21. Putting the values in equation (1)
21 =
k = 126
Step 2 of 2:
Now we are asked to find the number of revolutions made by the larger wheel if it has 14 cogs. So, x = 14 and we need to find y. Putting the values in equation (1)
y =
Now, put the value of k = 126
y =
d = 9 revolutions
Final Answer:
Hence, the number of revolutions made by the larger wheel is 9
