Question
Recommendations for safely thawing a frozen turkey are provided on the packaging
a) What is thaw rate of the turkey in hours per pound for refrigerator thawing ? For cold water thawing ?
b) Write a linear function in the form y = mx + b to represent the time ,t, in hours , it takes to thaw a turkey in the refrigerator as a function of the weight ,W, in pounds of the turkey.
Hint:
Convert day/ minute into hour
The correct answer is: a) Rate for refrigerator thawing = 1 fourth day per pound Rate for cold water thawing = half hour per pound, b) t = 6W
SOL – (a) Thaw rate of the turkey is given by slope
In the figure, refrigerator thawing : 1 day for every 4 pounds
Rate for refrigerator thawing = day per pound
We have been asked to find rate in hour per pound and we know that 1 day = 24 hours
So, Rate for refrigerator thawing = 24 hour per pound
= 6 hour per pound ---- (1)
Also, in the figure, cold water thawing : 30 minutes per pound
Rate for cold water thawing = 30 minutes per pound
We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = hours
So, Rate for cold water thawing = 30 hour per pound
= hour per pound.
(b) Time taken to thaw a turkey in refrigerator = t hours
Weight of the turkey = W pound
Equation of the line is (y – y1) = m(x – x1) where m is slope.
m = 6 hour per pound - From (1)
Now, it is given that refrigerator thawing : 24 hours for every 4 pounds i.e. (24 , 4)
So, (t – 24) = 6 (W – 4)
t – 24 = 6W – 24
t = 6W
