Question

If the iron reacts with hydrochloric acid to form ferrous chloride and hydrogen, then what will be the atomic mass of the product?

  1. 93.5 grams
  2. 107.5 grams
  3. 129 grams
  4. 130 grams

hintHint:

Molecular mass is the sum of atomic mass multiplied by the number of atoms.

The correct answer is: 129 grams

    • If the iron reacts with hydrochloric acid to form ferrous chloride and hydrogen, then the atomic mass of the product is 129 grams.
    • As we know when iron reacts with hydrochloric acid, the reaction form is, Fe + 2HCl = FeCl2 + H2. This suggests that on the products side, the compound formed is  FeCl2.
    • Now, as we know the atomic mass of iron is 56 grams and that of chlorine is 35.5 grams. Thus, if we calculate the mass of FeCl2, we get 56 + 35.5 X 2 which gives 127 grams as the total.

When hot iron reacts with chlorine gas, the product will be ferric chloride, (FeCl3 )instead of ferrous chloride.
