The University of Iowa is a Public Research University located close to the Iowa River in the United States. It is the oldest University in the city of Iowa. The University has 12 colleges affiliated with it.
The University of Iowa was the first public university to admit women and set up a department for religious studies. It was also the first university to start a coeducational medical school. In 1970, it recognized the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and Allied Union. The Carnegie Classification of Universities recognised Iowa as an ‘R1 Doctoral Universities -very high research activity. The university was the original developer of the ‘Master of Fine Arts Programme. Iowa Writers Workshop, run by the University of Iowa, offers a graduate Program in creative writing.
The Master of Fine arts degree in Creative writing is touted as the best in the United States.
It is a kind of Creative writing program which admits less than 5% of its applicants. This workshop has produced 17 Pulitzer Prize winners. UNESCO has recognized this institution for its Excellence.
