Adverbs vs. Adjectives

Adverb: An adverb is a word that modifies or describes not just a verb but also an adjective, an adverb, or even a whole sentence.

Adjective: An adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun.

Adverbs vs adjectives

  1. Agreement with other words: Adverbs and adjectives both do not change depending on the number or gender of any word.
  2. Placement in the sentence: Adverbs are usually placed at the end of a sentence or phrase. Adverbs may also be placed right before the verb they modify. Adjectives are placed right before the noun or pronoun that they modify. When being used with linking verbs, they are placed immediately after the verb.
  3. Types of adverbs: There are six types of adverbs in English:
  1. Adverb of time: Describes when an action occurs.
  2. Adverb of place: Describes where an action occurs.
  3. Adverb of manner: Describes how an action occurs.
  4. Adverb of frequency: Describes how often an action occurs.
  5. Adverb of degree: Describes how intensely an action occurs.
  6. Conjunctive adverbs: Links two clauses or sentences.

4. Types of adjectives: There are eight types of adjectives in English:

  1. Descriptive adjectives: Describes the kind or quality of a noun or pronoun.
  2. Numeral adjectives: Describes the number of a noun or pronoun.
  3. Quantitative adjectives: Describes the quantity of a noun or pronoun.
  4. Demonstrative adjectives: Points out to a particular noun or pronoun.
  5. Interrogative adjectives: Ask questions.
  6. Possessive adjectives: Describes the ownership or possession.
  7. Proper adjectives: Adjectives formed from proper nouns.
  8. Exclamatory adjectives: Used as an exclamation.
