What are Antonyms? 

Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. 

Examples of Antonyms:  

Bad is an antonym of good. 

Coward is an antonym for hero. 

Depending on the context in which the same term is used, some words may have multiple antonyms

CATEGORIES OF ANTONYMS:  

Graded Antonyms: 

Graded antonyms deal with pairs of words that have levels of meaning, for instance, if something is not good, it may still not be bad

Example:  

  1. Big and Small 

Complementary Antonyms:  

Complementary antonyms have a relationship where there is no middle ground. There are only two chances, either one or the other. 

Example: 

  1. Yes and No 

Relational Antonyms:  

Relational antonyms are sometimes examined as a subcategory of complementary antonyms. With these pairs, for there to be a relationship, both must exist. 

Examples: 

  1. Win-Lose 

Antonyms by Adding a Prefix:

Examples:  

By adding “un”: Likely and unlikely 

By adding “in”: Tolerant and intolerant
