Key Concepts

  • Distribute things in several ways.
  • Equation

Introduction:

James has 7 apples in his fruit basket.

He gave some apples to Jenny.
He gave some apples to Jerald.

How many apples can each get?

Solve it and check your answer if it matches the other’s answer.

Let us understand this.

parallel

Can he give equally to Jenny and Jerald?
If or if not, give the reason.

Let us discuss this.

Examples

Example:

There are 5 fish in all. If some fish are inside the aquarium and some fish are in the jug of water. How many fish are inside the aquarium? What are some of the ways?

parallel
Fishes

One way:

3 in the aquarium and 2 in the jug.

fish

equation example with aquarium

Another way:

4 in the aquarium and 1 in the jug.

The addition equation is 5 = 4 + 1

Try It

There are some fruits on the tree and some fruits are on the ground.

  1. 6 apples in all. How many are on the tree and on the ground? Write the equation.
  1. 7 apples in all. How many are on the tree and on the ground? Write the equation.
  1. 8 apples in all. How many are on the tree and on the ground? Write the equation.
  1. 9 apples in all. How many are on the tree and on the ground? Write the equation.

Higher-Order Thinking

Alex bought a dozen of eggs from the grocery store and kept 1 or 2 on the table and kept the remaining in the refrigerator. Draw the picture and write the equation.

Solution:

1 dozen = 12

1 or 2 on the table

One way

12 = 1 + 11

Another way

If one on table

eggs

Other way

12 = 2 + 10

Exercise

  1. If there are 3 bats in all, how many are inside the cave and outside the cave?  Draw the pictures and write the equation.
  2. If there are 4 birds in all, how many are on the tree and around the tree? Write the equation.
  3. If there are 10 flowers in all, how many are on the plant? How many are on the ground? Write the equation.
  4. If there are 8 seeds in all, some are planted and some are in the hand. Write the equation in two ways.
  5. If there are 6 toys in all, some are in the bag; some are outside the bag. Write the equation in any one way.
  6. If there are 5 books in all, some are on the bench, and some are on the table. Draw the pictures.
  7. If there are 9 apples in all, some are on the tree, and some are on the ground. Draw the pictures.
  8. If there are 2 cats in all, some can be on the wall, and some can be on the bed. Write the equation.
  9. If 7 bats in all. How many are inside the cave and outside the cave? Draw the pictures and write the equation.
