A compound of Al and Cl is composed of 9g of Al for every 35.5g of Cl. From this information we can say that for 1/3 moles of aluminum 1mole of chlorine is present. Also we know oxidation state of aluminum is +3 and that of chlorine is -1. For a neutral compound one aluminum requires three chlorine atoms. Hence, the empirical formula is AlCl3.
