Question

Ana has bought 12 3 over 6kg of flour. Mary has bought 14 2 over 8 kg of flour and Kristina has bought 11 8 over 12 kg of flour. The one who has bought more flour is

  1. Ana
  2. Mary
  3. Kristina
  4. Ana & Mary both

hintHint:

In this question the concept of rational numbers is used, Rational numbers are those numbers which are in the form of p/q where p and q are integers and q is not equal to 0. Some examples are 2/3, -1/2, 4, etc.
Here in this question, we will use the same concept of rational numbers and the properties to find out who has bought more flour.

The correct answer is: Mary

So as per the the question, we have given that:
ana has bought 12 3 over 6kg of flour
mary has bought 14 2 over 8 kg of flour
kristina has bought 11 8 over 12 kg of flour
Lets simplify the numeric values, we get:
A n a equals 12 3 over 6 equals fraction numerator left parenthesis 12 cross times 6 right parenthesis plus 3 over denominator 6 end fraction equals fraction numerator 36 plus 3 over denominator 6 end fraction equals 39 over 6 equals 13 over 2
M a r y equals 14 2 over 8 equals fraction numerator left parenthesis 14 cross times 8 right parenthesis plus 2 over denominator 8 end fraction equals fraction numerator 118 plus 2 over denominator 8 end fraction equals 120 over 8 equals 15 over 1
K r i s t i n a equals 11 8 over 12 equals fraction numerator left parenthesis 11 cross times 12 right parenthesis plus 8 over denominator 12 end fraction equals fraction numerator 132 plus 8 over denominator 12 end fraction equals 140 over 12 equals 70 over 6
Now making the denominator same of all three rational numbers, we get:
    A n a equals 13 over 2 cross times 3 over 3 equals 39 over 6
M a r y equals 15 over 1 cross times 6 over 6 equals 90 over 6
K r i s t i n a equals 70 over 6
Now comparing the terms, we get:
    39 over 6 less than 70 over 6 less than 90 over 6

So, Mary has bought more flour.

Here the concept of rational numbers was used. The terms were equalized with respect to the denominator and we found that Mary bought maximum flour. The rational numbers were simplifies first to make the terms easier.
