Question

If five being added to twice a number and two being added to five times a number is same, then the number is

  1. The number is 0
  2. The number is 1
  3. The number is 1.5
  4. The number is 0.5

hintHint:

An equation has a constant, variable and an equal to sign. It has two sides LHS and RHS. A linear equation in one variable is equation with only one variable and in which the highest degree is 1. Here, we have to find the value of unknown value, by operating both sides with the same number so that the equation will be balanced.

The correct answer is: The number is 1

In the question it is given that if five being added to twice a number and two being added to five times a number is same.
Here, we have to find the unknown number.
Step 1: Convert the word problem into numerical equation.
Let the number be x.
5+2x= 5x+2
Bring all the terms containing variables in one side by operating same numbers on both sides to balance the equation.
Step 2: Subtract both the sides by by 2x.
rightwards double arrow5+2x-2x= 5x+2-2x
rightwards double arrow5= 5x+2-2x
Step 3: Subtract 2 on both sides.
rightwards double arrow5-2= 5x+2-2x-2
rightwards double arrow5-2= 5x-2x
rightwards double arrow3= 5x-2x
Step 4: Solve the RHS.
rightwards double arrow3= 3x
Step 5: Divide both the sides by 3.
rightwards double arrow 3 over 3 equals fraction numerator 3 x over denominator 3 end fraction
rightwards double arrow x equals 1
So, the unknown number is 1.
Therefore, the correct option is b,i.e., the number is 1.

Like terms are the terms having same variable of same power in which the coefficient may not be the same whereas unlike terms are the terms which don't have same variable. Addition and subtraction are possible in like terms but not in unlike terms.
