Question

Remo drove his motorcycle 325 miles on Friday, 119 miles on Saturday and 465 miles on Sunday. The best estimate of the number of miles he drove over the 3 days is_______.

  1. 1000
  2. 900
  3. 800
  4. 700

hintHint:

The front end estimation of a number means regarding off the number to the nearest thousands/hundreds/tens or whatever be the place value of the leading digit of the number.

The correct answer is: 900

Here, we have to find the number of miles Remo drove his motorcycle over the 3 days given that he drove 325 miles on friday, 119 miles on Saturday and 465 on Sunday.
Since, all the three distances are in hundreds. So we have to round off to nearest hundreds.
On Friday, Distance driven = 325 miles
325 miles rounded off to nearest hundred in 300 miles.
On Saturday, Distance driven= 119 miles
119 miles rounded off to nearest hundred is 100 miles.
On Saturday, Distance driven = 465 miles
465 miles rounded off to nearest hundred is 500 miles.
So, Total distance driven by Remo over the three days
300 + 100 + 500
= 900 miles
Hence, the correct option is B

We can also add all the 3 distance at first and then use front end estimation.
Here, 325 + 119 + 465 = 909  which when rounded off to nearest hundred gives 900.

Step 1 : Round Off ;

if last 2 digits are more than or equal to 50, round off to nearest hundred greater than number .

if last 2 digits are less than 50, round off to nearest hundred  smaller than number.

9438 rounds off to 9400.

The difference of 516 and 140 using front-end estimation is ________.

Step 1 :
In 516, five is the first number and in 140, 1 is first number or front number so simply add them.
5 - 1 = 4 as they are at hundredth place so 400
next , 16 to nearest hundred is 0 and 40 to nearest 100 is 0 .
0 - 0 = 0 ;
Step 2 :
add all estimations 400 + 0 ;
So , 400 is our final answer.
