Question
Rosy creates a pattern using the white and black tiles.
The number of black tiles in the next shape in Rosy’s pattern is _____.
- 16
- 20
- 25
- 36
Hint:
We are given the a sequence of increasing tiles created by Rosy. Shapes are made using black and white tiles. We are asked the number of black tiles in the next shape. We will find the rule used to create the patterns. Using the rule, we will find the number of black tiles in next shape.
The correct answer is: 25
The number of tiles is increasing with number of shapes.
The number of shapes and tiles are as follows
The first shape requires 22 = 4 black tiles.
The second shape requires 32 = 9 black tiles.
The third shape requires 42 = 16 black tiles.
So, the number of tiles is square of a number and the number is increasing by 1.
Therefore, the fourth shape requires 52 = 25 black tiles.
While solving such questions, we have to be careful about the sequence of the pattern.
