Question
Solve the following using the substitution method and find the value of x and y:
4x + y = -9
5x – 3y = 10
- -1, -5
- -1, 5
- 1, -5
- 2, 5
Hint:
An equation with the maximum order of 1 and an equation of a straight line is called the linear equation.
The correct answer is: -1, -5
Step 1 of 1:
We have given linear equations
4x + y = -9…………………………. 1
5x – 3y = 10…………………………… 2
From 1
4x + y = -9
y = -9 – 4x…………………… 3
Substituting y in 2nd equation,
5x – 3(-9 – 4x) = 10
5x + 27 + 12x = 10
17x + 27 = 10
17x = -17
x = -1
Substituting x in 3rd equation,
y = -9 – 4(-1)
= -9 + 4
= -5
The substitution method is the algebraic method to solve simultaneous linear equations.
