Question
Solve the following using the substitution method and find the value of x and y:
x + 4y = -18
2x + y = -1
- 2, -5
- -2, -5
- 1, 2
- -2, -5
Hint:
An equation with the maximum order of 1 and an equation of a straight line is called the linear equation.
The correct answer is: 2, -5
Step 1 of 1:
We have given two linear equations
x + 4y = -18…………………… 1
2x + y = -1……………………. 2
From 1
x + 4y = -18
x = -18 – 4y
Substituting x in 2nd equation,
2(-18 – 4y) + y = -1
-36 - 8y + y = -1
-7y – 36 = -1
-7y = -1 + 36
-7y = 35
y = -5
Substituting y in 1st equation,
x + 4(-5) = -18
x - 20 = -18
x = 2
The substitution method is the algebraic method to solve simultaneous linear equations.
