Question
Solve the following using the substitution method and find the value of x and y:
x – 5y = 12
x – y = 4
- 2, -2
- 3, -3
- 4, -4
- 1, -4
Hint:
The linear equation in two variable is an equation with two variable and degree one.
The correct answer is: 2, -2
Step 1 of 1:
We have given two equations
x – 5y = 12……………………… 1
x – y = 4………………………. 2
From 2
x – y = 4
x = 4 + y
Substituting x in 1st equation,
(4+y) – 5y = 12
4 + y - 5y =12
4 - 4y =12
-4y = 8
y = -2
Substituting in 2nd equation,
x - (-2) = 4
x + 2 = 4
x = 2
In the substitution method, we first write one variable in the form of another variable.
