Question
Susan went shopping, she bought 2 cards that cost 5 dollars each and 2 envelopes that cost 3 dollars each. Choose the expression shows the total money she spent on cards and envelopes.
- 3(2 + 2)
- 2(2 + 3)
- 2(3 + 5)
- 5(3 + 2)
Hint:
Distributive property is the law in which we can solve problems which are in the form a(b+c). To solve this type of problem we just have to multiply a with b and then c which can be written as ab+ ac and then finally add them. It is one of the common formula which is used to solve problems. Here, we have to solve the word problem using distributive property.
The correct answer is: 2(3 + 5)
In the question it is given that,
Total number of cards Susan bought = 2
Each card costs = 5 dollars
Number of envelopes bought = 2
Cost of each envelope = 3 dollars
Here, we have to find the expression for the total money spent on cards and envelopes.
Cost of cards = 2×5 dollars
Cost of envelopes = 2×3 dollars
So, the expression for the total money spent on cards and envelopes
= (2×5) + (2×3)
= 2×(3+5)
Thus, the expression for the total money spent on cards and envelopes is 2×(3+5).
Therefore, the correct option is c, i.e., 2(3+5).
In distributive property, when a factor is to be multiplied with the sum of two numbers, we do not directly add the two numbers and then multiply the sum with the factor. Rather, we multiply both the numbers with the factor differently and then add the multiplication value.
