Question
The equation of the line through the point (2, 3) with slope –2 is
y = –2x + 7
y = –2x + 3
y = –2x + 1
y = –2x – 1
Hint:
Equation of a line in slope point form can be written as- (y-y1) = m (x-x1).
The correct answer is: y = –2x + 7
GIVEN- Point passing through the given line- (2,3) Slope = m = -2 TO FIND- Equation of the given line. SOLUTION- We know that point (2,3) passes through the given line and it has a slope of -2. Hence, x1 = 2, y1 = 3, m = -2. (y - y1) = m (x - x1) ∴ (y - 3) = -2 (x - 2) ∴ y - 3 = -2 (x) - 2 (-2) ∴ y - 3 = -2x + 4 ∴ y = -2x + 4 + 3 ∴ y = -2x + 7 FINAL ANSWER- Option 'a' i.e. 'y = -2x + 7' is the correct answer to the given question.
