Question
While collecting some marbles, John put 6 marbles in the first box, 18 marbles in the second box, 54 marbles in the third box, and 162 marbles in the fourth box. If this pattern continues, how many marbles will John put in the fifth box?
- 324
- 486
- 456
- 476
Hint:
We are given the that John is collection marbles. He put different number of marbles in different boxes. The number of marble represents number of sequence. We have given number of marbles up to 4 boxes. We have to find number of marbles in 5th box. We will find the relation between the first two terms. Using the relation, we will find the required value.
The correct answer is: 486
The number of marbles are 6, 18, 54, 162
We are asked the number of marbles in fifth pages. It means we have to find the next term in the series.
We will divide the second term by the first term.
We will see if we get the constant that we can use to write the complete pattern.
18 ÷ 6 = 3
Now, we will multiply this constant from the second term to see if we get the third term. The number sequence of increasing.
18 × 3 = 54
54 × 3 = 162
All the terms matches the terms of given sequence. So, we will continue the multiplication to find the number of marbles in fifth box.
162 × 3 = 486
Therefore, number of marbles in fifth box will be 486.
For such questions, we should know the basic operations. When the rule used to write the pattern is not mentioned, we have to use all four operations to check the pattern. The operations are addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
