Question

Write the following expressions in statements:
3m + 11

  1. m is multiplied by 3, and 11 is added
  2. 11 is multiplied by m, and 3 is added
  3. 3 is multiplied by x
  4. None of the above

hintHint:

The above expression is algebraic expression. Algebraic expression has two components, a variable and a constant. Variable is a quantity which doesn't have a fixed value. It is represented by alphabets. And a constant has a fixed value. In the above equation there is one variable which is m. And the two constants are 3 and 11. We have to find the operation between the variable and constants.

The correct answer is: m is multiplied by 3, and 11 is added

    The given equation is 3m+11.
The above expression has two operations. First the term is 3m. It has a variable and a constant. The operation between them is multiplication. Here, the variable is multipled by the constant 3.
Now after the multiplication, there is plus sign between 3m and 11. It means addition. A constant 11 is added to the term 3m.
It means first, the variable m is multipled by a constant 3 and then 11 is added to the whole term. Therefore, option (a) which is 'm is multiplied by 3, and 11 is added' is right option.

We have to be careful about which operation is performed first.
