Question

Three balls A comma blank B comma blank C are thrown from a height blank h with equal speed upwards, downwards and horizontally respectively. What is the relation among speeds v subscript A end subscript comma blank v subscript B end subscript comma blank v subscript C end subscript with which they hit the ground?

  1. v subscript A end subscript equals blank v subscript B end subscript equals blank v subscript C end subscript
  2. v subscript A end subscript greater than v subscript C end subscript greater than v subscript B end subscript
  3. v subscript A end subscript equals blank v subscript B end subscript greater than v subscript C end subscript
  4. v subscript A end subscript less than v subscript C end subscript less than v subscript B end subscript

The correct answer is: v subscript A end subscript equals blank v subscript B end subscript greater than v subscript C end subscript

Let the initial velocity of balls A comma blank B blank a n d blank C are equal and its magnitude is u. Since, the ball A is projected with velocity u in upward direction, so when it will come back to the projection point, its velocity remains same. So, the final velocity of ball A comma when it hits the ground is given as

v subscript A end subscript superscript 2 end superscript equals u to the power of 2 end exponent plus 2 g h
Hence, v subscript A end subscript equals square root of u to the power of 2 end exponent plus 2 g h end root blank left parenthesis i right parenthesis
And the final velocity of ball B is
v subscript B end subscript equals square root of u to the power of 2 end exponent plus 2 g h end root blank open parentheses i i close parentheses
But the initial vertical velocity of the ball C is zero.
So, v subscript C end subscript superscript 2 end superscript equals square root of open parentheses 0 close parentheses to the power of 2 end exponent plus 2 g h end root
rightwards double arrow blank v subscript C end subscript equals square root of 2 g h end root(iii)
Hence, it is clear from Eqs. (i), (ii) and (iii), we get
v subscript A end subscript equals v subscript B end subscript greater than v subscript C end subscript
