Question

When a sample of solid lithium is placed in a flask of hydrogen gas then following reaction happened blank subscript 1 end subscript superscript 1 end superscript H plus subscript 3 end subscript L i to the power of 7 end exponent rightwards arrow subscript 2 end subscript H e to the power of 4 end exponent plus subscript 2 end subscript H e to the power of 4 end exponent This statement is

  1. True
  2. False
  3. May be true at a particular pressure
  4. None of these

The correct answer is: False

The given reaction is a nuclear reaction, which can take place only if a proton (a hydrogen nucleus) comes into contact with a lithium nucleus. If the hydrogen is in the atomic from, the interaction between it's electron cloud and the electron cloud of a lithium atom keeps the two nuclei from getting close to each other. Even if isolated protons are used, they must be fired at the Li atom with enough kinetic energy to over come the electric repulsion between the proton and Li atom
