Question
A pole of length 10 m casts a shadow 2 m long on the ground. At the same time, a tower casts a shadow of length of 60 m on the ground. Find the height of the tower.
Hint:
Similar triangles are the triangles that have corresponding sides in proportion to each other and corresponding angles equal to each other. Similar triangles look the same but the sizes can be different.
The correct answer is: Hence, the height of the tower is 300 m.
Height of pole = EF = 10 m
Length of the shadow of pole DC = 2 m
Length of the shadow of tower = BC = 28 m
In △ABC and △EDC
∠B= ∠D = 90o
∠C of △ABC =∠C of △EDC
∴△ABC∼△DEF by AA similarity criterion
We know that if two triangles are similar, the ratio of their sides is in proportion
So,
AB = 300 m
Final Answer:
Hence, the height of the tower is 300 m.
