Question
Leonard walks 14 meters south and 48 meters east to get to school. If he takes the straight path home after school, how far will he have to walk?
Hint:
Pythagoras' theorem states that “In a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of squares of the other two sides“. The sides of this triangle have been named Perpendicular, Base and Hypotenuse. Here, the hypotenuse is the longest side, as it is opposite to the angle 90°.
If a is the perpendicular, b is the base, and c is the hypotenuse, then according to the definition, the Pythagoras Theorem formula is given as
c2= a2 + b2
The correct answer is: Leonard has to walk 50 m if he takes the straight path home after school
Here, Length of perpendicular(a) =14 m
Length of base(b) = 48 m
Let’s say that the shortest distance is d and here that distance is the hypotenuse of the right-angled triangle.
Using Pythagoras theorem
d2 = a2 + b2
d2 = 142 + 482
d2 = 2500
d = 50 m
Final Answer:
Hence, Leonard has to walk 50 m if he takes the straight path home after school.
Final Answer:
Hence, Leonard has to walk 50 m if he takes the straight path home after school.
