Question

The figure above shows that the shaded triangular region with a hypotenuse of 5 centimeters (cm) has been removed from a rectangular tile with dimensions x cm by y cm. Of the following, which best approximates the area, in square centimeters, of the tile before the piece was removed?

  1. 15
  2. 43
  3. 50
  4. 65

The correct answer is: 65

    Area of the rectangle =x cross times y
    The rectangle is divided into three triangles.
    For the first triangle, theta =30, hypotenuse =a, and adjacent =y
    For the second triangle, theta=30, hypotenuse =b, adjacent =a, opposite =5
    For the third triangle, theta=30, hypotenuse =b, and adjacent =x
    from trigonometry,
    sintheta= opposite/hypotenuse
    costheta =operator name{adjacent} / hypotenuse
    tantheta = opposite/adjacent
    Since one side of the second triangle is given, we can find the other two sides (a and b).
    sin 30 = 5/b
    b = 5/sin(30)
    b = 10
    tan 30 = 5/a
    a = 5/tan(3)
    a equals 5 square root of 3
    For the third triangle,
    cos 30 =x/10
    x = 10 cos 30
    x equals 5 square root of 3
    Similarly, for the first triangle,
    cos 30 = y divided by 5 square root of 3
    y equals 5 square root of 3 space cos 30
    y = 15/2
    Therefore, area of triangle = 5 square root of 3 cross times 15 divided by 2
    = 65 centimeters

    Ryan has 1,500 yards of yarn. He wants to knit at least 2 scarves and at least 3 hats. Each scarf requires 300 yards of yarn, and each hat requires 120 yards of yarn. If s represents the number of scarves and h represents the number of hats, which of the following systems of inequalities represents this situation?

    A collection of more than one inequality in one or more variables is known as a system of inequalities. Systems of inequalities are helpful when a problem's potential solutions are subject to several constraints, and a variety of potential solutions are required.
    ¶An infinite number of ordered pair solutions for inequality in the set, each specified by a region in a rectangular coordinate plane. When two inequalities are considered, the collection of simultaneously ordered pair solutions is defined by the intersection of these sets.
    ¶Systems of inequalities can be solved slightly differently than systems of linear equations because the substitution and elimination methods are not applied. Only the limitations of the inequality signs, ≤, and ≥, are responsible for this.
