Question
Let us consider two cars, A and B, are moving with constant acceleration 4 m/s2 and constant velocity 6 m/s with t = 0 s, both cars are 20 m apart, car A is behind car B, find the time when car A overtakes car B.
- 5.2
- 3.1
- 3.4
- 6.2
Hint:
- Use equations of motion.
The correct answer is: 3.4
- Given that Car A is moving with acceleration 4 m/s^2 with no initial velocity .
- Car B is moving with constant 6 m/s.
- The Distance covered by each car is equal during the instant of Overtaking.
- By the equation of motion ut+1/2at^2 = ut + 20
1/2(4)t2 = 6t + 20
- Solving the quadratic equation we get t = 3.4 (approx)
1/2(4)t2 = 6t + 20
