    He explained his theory with the help of various examples:-
    Elongation of neck of giraffe: he states that the ancestor of the giraffe had a small neck and legs. Due to the scarcity of food at the ground level, they begin to stretch them to reach the top of the tree for food which resulted in the slight elongation of these parts.
    Wings of the flightless bird: he state that the ancestor of flightless bird such as ostrich had wings to fly but with time and abundance of food on the ground these wings were disuse and later become vestigial.
