Question
Water flows through a cylindrical pipe of 7 cm internal diameter at 5 meters per second. Calculate the
i) volume in litres of water discharged by the pipe in one minute and
ii) the time in minutes, the pipe would take to fill an empty rectangular tank of dimensions 4m x 3m x 2.31m
Hint:
First, we find out the internal volume of the pipe, through which the water would pass. Secondly, we calculate the volume of water discharged in one minute by multiplying 60, since 1min = 60sec. Lastly, we find the capacity of tank by calculating its volume and find the required time.
The correct answer is: i) The required volume is 1155 L
Explanations:
Step 1 of 3:
With respect to water flow in 1second, the length of the pipe is 5m = 500cm (= h).
Given, r = 7/2cm (internal radius)
Volume of internal side of the pipe = cm3= 19.25 L (since 1L = 1000cm3)
So, volume of water of water flows through the pipe in 1 second is 19.25 L.
Step 2 of 3:
Volume of water discharged by the pipe in one minute
= 1155 L
Step 3 of 3:
Capacity of the rectangular rank = = 27.72 L
The time required = mins = 1.44 secs
Final Answer:
The required volume is 1155 L
