Question

Why do you have to state the domain when simplifying rational expressions ?

hintHint:

A rational expression is simply a quotient of two polynomials. Or is other words, it is a fraction whose numerator and denominator are polynomials.
We are asked to explain why we have to state the domain when simplifying a rational expression.

The correct answer is: We have to state the domain of a rational expression while simplifying them because we are cancelling expressions which are common to numerator and the denominator and because that expression is in denominator, we must exclude its zero as dividing with zero is not defined.

    Step 1 of 1:
We have to state the domain of a rational expression while simplifying them because we are cancelling expressions which are common to numerator and the denominator and because that expression is in denominator, we must exclude its zero as dividing with zero is not defined.

In mathematics, division by zero is not possible, that is, it’s not defined.

The company compares the ratios of surface area to volume for two more containers . One is a rectangular prism with a square base. The other is rectangular prism with a rectangular base. One side of the base is equal to the side length of first container. And the other side is twice as long. The Surface area of this second container is 4 x squared plus 6 x h . The heights of two containers are equal. Which has the smaller surface area -to – Volume ratio?
