Capital Letters
There are 26 letters in the English alphabet.
These are called capital letters. [ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ]
Capital letters are known as upper-case letters.
Capitalization means using capital letters.
When do you use capital letters?
Capitalization Rules:
- Always capitalize the first letter in a sentence.
Example:
The car is red.
They are going to the shop.
Swimming is so much fun.
2. Always capitalize the pronoun I.
You should never utilize I like this-
i love… (Incorrect)
I love…. (Correct)
Example:
Samson is going to order fish and I am going to order ice cream.
Do you think I should talk to her?
3. Always capitalize the names of people.
Alice
James
John
Snow White
4. Always capitalize the names of cities, countries, continents, nationalities and languages.
Names of all the cities – Sydney, New York, London, Paris, Dubai, etc.
Names of all the countries- Brazil, Canada, Egypt, India, Germany, etc.
Nationalities- Chinese, American, German, Indian, South African, etc.
Names of continents- Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, Australia, etc.
Names of all the languages- English, Spanish, French, Russian, German, Italian, etc.
5. Always capitalize the names of buildings, monuments, bridges, and tunnels.
Example-
Golden Gate Bridge,
Big Ben, Taj Mahal,
Eiffel Tower,
Lincoln Tunnel, etc.
6. Always capitalize the names of water bodies, mountains and celestial objects.
A river is just a river and is not capitalized, but the name of the river like Mississippi River must be capitalized.
Names of ponds, lakes, rivers, seas and oceans will always be capitalized.
Example:
Dal Lake,
Nile River,
Mediterranean Sea,
Dead Sea,
Indian Ocean, etc.
Names of mountains, mountain ranges, hills and volcanoes will always be capitalized.
Example:
Mount Everest (mountain),
Himalayan Range (mountain range),
Malabar Hill (Hill),
Mount Vesuvius (volcano), etc.
Always capitalize names of planets, comets and other celestial objects.
Example:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Sun, etc.
7. Always capitalize the names of educational institutions and organizations.
Always capitalize the names of schools, universities, organizations, institutions, political parties, etc.
Example:
Harvard University
Hope International School
Isabella Thoburn College
British Broadcasting Corporation
United Nations Organization
etc.
8. Always capitalize the names of days, months, festivals and special days.
Example:
Monday, Friday, January, December, Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve, International Women’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, etc.
9. Always capitalize the titles of books, movies, magazines, etc.
10. Always capitalize the titles like Dr., Mr., Mrs. and Miss.
Example:
I went to Dr Diana for a check-up.
Mr. Sam is very busy.
I am going to bake a cake with Mrs. Smith.
Children go to school with Miss Emily.
