New Vocabulary (Present-Practice-Produce)

Read the following paragraph. There are some words in bold. Try replacing them with new words similar in meaning.

Rock  Music

In rock music there are different and almost uncontrollable beats. None of the beats possess the characteristics of the modern music. Yet each song has a  highly recognizable rhythm. The listeners’ feet usually starts to pick up the beat when they listen to the song.

Before long, the entire body seems to be moving with the rhythm. The head pounds with the beat, and there is no space for thought. Only the flow of the music is vital. In one way or the other, rock music is as important as the Rock of Gibraltar. Its message is a great emotional one.

There are 2 Types of Vocabulary:

  1. The first one is receptive vocabulary refers to the words that we hear and read.
  2. The second one is expressive vocabulary which implies to the words that we use for speaking and writing.

New vocabulary is denoted as the group and collection of new words, though different sources, put into practice by a  specific person.

Vocabulary is also commonly called word-stock, lexis, and lexicon.

Importance of New Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a significant part of anyone’s life and the following points describe the importance of putting into practice new vocabulary.

Study the passage given below paying special attention to the highlighted words. Then, list the highlighted words and try to replace them with better vocabulary.

John’s absentmindedness, though constant and long-standing, has usually showed itself in small ways. However, there are two situations, which though not very important, may have caused certain people to doubt my understanding.  The first was when his wife asked him to take the sitting room clock to be repaired.

With his two children in the car he drove into the marketplace of his little city and, clock under arm, got into the store. Only it wasn’t the right pace: it was a cloth store. His children, who always took delight in their father’s problem, watched laughing in a silly way as, with his thoughts far away, he stood staring into the salesman’s eye.

He had been a customer for a long time and the good man smiled in expectation as he turned his chopper in his hand and he clutched his clock. This went on for few seconds before he realized where he was. There is no doubt he should have calmly purchased some cloths, but his return to the world was very sudden, the prospect of explanation too unthinkable. He merely nodded briefly and left.

It can be done in the following ways:

  1. Synonyms are other words that will mean practically the same thing for the word.
  2. The use of common phrases with deeper meanings or metaphors can be used.

Why using new vocabulary is important?

  1. It can open up a good conversation

Improve your vocabulary to help you socialize. The newfound wealth of knowledge and ability to converse with an array of vocabulary can make you a sociable human.

  1. Leads to writing improvement

Having learnt a mix of words and ways to use them, your written work will show some significant improvement. For anyone who writes for fun, for work, for school or university and so on, improving vocabulary can get one’s work to a higher standard and make the act of writing easier and increasingly enjoyable.

A simple and a basic reason to improve your vocabulary is that the language itself is interesting! There is so much to learn and it can be fascinating to find out the meaning behind words and the origins of language.

  1. People may perceive you better

This may not be your primary reason to improve your vocabulary, but it is still a valid motivation. Having a repertoire of language to use can improve the way you are presented to people
