  • English Word-Making is primarily a synchronic study of the English language. Its chief purpose is to illustrate and analyze the type of word formation within and characterize the present-day English linguistic system.
  • Word is a sound or a combination of sounds, or its representative in writing or printing, that symbolizes and expresses a meaning. It consists of a single morpheme or a combination of morphemes.

  • A morpheme is the smallest indivisible unit of semantic content and grammatical function.
  • Word roots are from other languages that are the origin of many English words.
  • Prefixes and suffixes can then be linked to the roots to form new words.
  • Words can sometimes belong to different grammatical classes, such as nouns, adjectives, or verbs.
  • A compound word is a union of two or more words to convey a unit idea or special meaning that is not as clearly or quickly conveyed by separated words.
  • Compound words can take three possible forms: closed, open, or hyphenated.
  • Homonyms may refer to three distinct classes of words.
  • A homographis a word that shares the exact spelling as another word but has a different meaning.
  • Context clues give an idea, or hint, of what an unfamiliar word might mean.
  • Contextual meaning is the meaning of a lexeme or word inside a context.
  • Denotation is defined as a dictionary of the word.
