Question

John performed one experiment. Find out the composition of air. He took the test tube fitted with a rubber cork. Then he poured some fresh lime water into it. Then he fitted the two long-bent tube through the two holes of rubber cork. He blew the air by an air pump through the long tube. The lime water present inside turns into a milky solution. This shows that the air contains

  1. Carbon dioxide
  2. Water
  3. Hydrogen
  4. Oxygen

hintHint:

The limewater is a dilute aqueous solution of carbon hydroxide. And when that component in the air reacts with lime water it forms salt and water.

The correct answer is: Carbon dioxide

When air passed from the lime water it turns milky which shows that the air contains Carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide is an acidic oxide, so it reacts with sodium hydroxide to form salt and water. The solution turns cloudy when carbon dioxide gas bubbles through a solution of calcium hydroxide.
