Question
Rita weighs glass of water and observes its weight to be 16 ounces. Rita then adds 8 ice cubes to the glass of water. Each ice cube weighs two ounces. After all the ice cubes have melted, what will be the approximate weight of the glass of water?
- 16 ounces
- 32 ounces
- 24 ounces
- 30 ounces
Hint:
According to the Law of conservation of mass, Only the state will change but the number of molecules or mass will be the same.
The correct answer is: 32 ounces
The weight of the water is 16g. When the 8 ice cubes melt in water each will add 2 ounces to the original weight. So, the new weight will be [16+ (8x2)] 32 ounces. When ice converts to water the weight will remain the same. This is the law of conservation of mass. Only the state will change but the number of molecules or mass will be the same.
