Question
Compare the following fractions.
.
- >
- <
- =
Hint:
1. When we compare 2 fraction, we check which one of the 2 is larger and which one is smaller and accordingly, assign the appropriate inequality sign i.e. greater than > or less than < to the 2 fractions.
2. If the denominators of the 2 fractions are different, we find the LCM of the denominator and multiply the denominators to make them equal to the LCM and then compare the numerators.
The correct answer is: >
GIVEN-
Fraction 1 = 3/4
Fraction 2 = 5/7
TO FIND-
Comparison between the 2 fractions.
SOLUTION-
From the given information, we observe that-
The denominators of both the fractions are different i.e. 4 & 7.
Hence, find the LCM of 4 & 7 i.e. 28.
We make the denominators equal to 28 as-
Fraction 1 = 3/4 = 3*7 / 4*7 = 21/28 ........................ (Multiplying and dividing the fraction by 7)
Fraction 2 = 5/7 = 5*4 / 7*4 = 20/28 ........................ (Multiplying and dividing the fraction by 4)
Now, that the denominators are the same, we compare the numerators as-
21 > 20
∴ 21/28 > 20/28
FINAL ANSWER-
Option 'a' i.e. '>' is the correct answer to the given question.
