Question

Find the least common denominator for 1 third space plus space 1 half space plus space 1 fourth.

  1. 8
  2. 6
  3. 9
  4. 12

hintHint:

In this question we have to find the least common denominator and for that we have to find the least common multiple of denominators. Least Common Denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of denominator of a set of fractions. The method of calculating the LCD is same as calculation of Least Common Multiple of fractions denominators. The least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the lowest possible number that can be divisible by both numbers.

The correct answer is: 12

The least common denominator is the lowest common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions.
    Step1:
We are given fractions 1 third space comma space 1 half and 1 fourth
And we have to find the LCM of denominators of the fractions i.e.3 comma 2 comma 4

    Step2:
We know that Multiples of 2
are:2 comma space 4 comma space 6 comma space 8 comma space 10 comma space 12 comma space 14 space horizontal ellipsis
And the multiples of 3 are:3 comma space 6 comma space 9 comma space 12 comma space 15 comma space 18 comma space 21 space horizontal ellipsis
And the multiples of 4 are:4 comma space 8 comma space 12 comma space 16 comma space 20 comma space 24 comma space 28 horizontal ellipsis
    Step3:
Now we have to find the LCM of 2 comma 3 comma 4
From the about multiples of 2 comma 3 and 4 it can be easily seen that the least common multiple of  is 12.

Hence the least common denominator of 1 third, 1 half and 1 fourth is 12.
