Question

Find the number that could NOT be a common denominator for 1 over 6 and 5 over 16?

  1. 6
  2. 18
  3. 36
  4. 108

hintHint:

In this question we have to find the least common denominator and for that we have to find the least common multiple of denominators. Least Common Denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of denominator of a set of fractions. The method of calculating the LCD is same as calculation of Least Common Multiple of fractions denominators. The least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the lowest possible number that can be divisible by both numbers.

The correct answer is: 18

The least common denominator is the lowest common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions.
    Step1: We are given fractions 1 over 6 and 5 over 16
And we have to find the LCM of denominators of the fractions i.e., 6 and 16.
Step2: We know that Multiples of 6 are:6 comma 12 comma 18 comma 24 comma 30 comma space 36 comma 42 comma 48 horizontal ellipsis
    And the multiples of 16 are:16 comma 32 comma 48 comma 64 comma 80 comma 96...
Step3: Now we have to find the LCM of 6 and 16.
From the above multiples of 6 and 16.it can be easily seen that the least common multiple of  is 48.
Hence the least common denominator of  1 over 6 and 5 over 16 is 48.
The denominator which is not multiple of 48 will be the answer of this question.
